Aspers make bid for Canwest newspapers

The Asper family is one of the six listed bidders for Canwest’s newspaper publishing division that went on sale earlier this year, the Globe and Mail reported this morning.

The newspaper chain includes major Canadian dailies the Ottawa Citizen, the Vancouver Sun, and the National Post, was well as 43 other publications across Canada.

Other bidders include BC newspaper magnate David Black, Vancouver-based community newspaper publisher Glacier Media Inc., National Post executive Paul Godfrey, and at least two other anonymous parties.

The newspapers went up for sale in January. The bid comes after Goldman Sachs moved to block the sale of Canwest Global to Shaw Communications yesterday.
