Battleground set for sports radio in Toronto
TSN Radio is looking to target a younger demo when it launches on April 13, Chum Radio president Chris Gordon tells MiC.
The gauntlet for the drive home has been thrown in the Toronto sports radio market, with TSN Radio announcing its 4 to 7 p.m. time slot will be hosted by TSN’s James Cybulski.
The show, titled Cybulski & Company is up against The Fan 590′s Bob McCowan in the same slot. Cybulski & Co will feature fellow TSN sportscasters James Duthie, Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre McGuire, Dave Naylor, Chris Schultz and Dan Shulman.
Chris Gordon, president, Chum Radio says that TSN Radio is targeting a different demo than other stations in the market, with younger, social media-savvy hosts and interactive segments involving the audience and brands.
‘Both Mike Richards and James Cybulski are very tech savvy, connected to their audiences via Twitter, and we plan to expand on that in some pretty dramatic ways in the coming months,’ he tells MiC.
‘We look at it as being not just a sports station. We are going to be integrating contemporary topics and we want people to relate to the personalities, who are going to be a bit younger than some of the other personalities in town. It is going to be a mix of great sports content as well as the ability to talk about things that are happening in Toronto and the entertainment world.’
TSN Radio is set to soft launch on April 13 with Cybulski & Company in the afternoon, Mike Richards in the morning, Steve Kouleas’s That’s Hockey 2Day at noon and two syndicated US shows, the Jim Rome Show and the Dan Patrick Show.
The station will also have exclusive access to ESPN Radio Network programming. Gordon says the station will be rolling out more talent as well as more live and local shows during the summer months, with a full slate of programming set to launch in the fall.
