Shaftesbury Films nabs Giller book for TMN series

Fresh from wrapping production of Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride for its January debut on CBC, nimble Toronto filmco bird-dogged Dr. Vincent Lam just days after he won this year's Giller Prize.

Toronto’s Shaftesbury Films continues to bring more ‘north’ to Hollywood North by nabbing the rights to top Canadian literature and then brokering deals to bring the books to the small screen. Mere days after Dr. Vincent Lam’s Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures snagged the top prize at last week’s Giller Awards, Shaftesbury secured the rights to develop the emergency room-related short stories into a drama series and inked a deal to air it on Astral Media’s The Movie Network, likely in 2008.

The Robber Bride is set to air on CBC here and both Oxygen and NBC Universal in the US in January. Shaftesbury is currently in production on the half-hour comedy series The Jane Show and the one-hour drama series ReGenesis.
