Smithsonian fare coming to Canada in HD

Programming from the largest museum and research complex in the world is set to hit Canadian televisions in a few weeks' time.

Toronto-based High Fidelity HDTV has cut a deal to add new programming from and about the Washington, DC-based Smithsonian Institution, the largest museum and research complex in the world.

Set to hit Canadian airwaves ‘within weeks,’ programming from Smithsonian Channel HD will be exclusively broadcast on three of High Fidelity’s channels: Oasis HD, Equator HD and Treasure HD. ‘Smithsonian Networks programming is a perfect fit for our suite of all-HD channels, and we are very proud to be able to offer it for the first time to Canadian viewers,’ says network partner/co-founder John Panikkar.

The lineup is diverse and educational, drawing on the chattels of the famed Smithsonian and covering a range of genres including wildlife, technology, history, culture and children’s programming. ‘As one of our first international distributors, this deal clearly demonstrates the brand value of the Smithsonian name throughout the world,’ explains Tom Hayden, GM of Smithsonian Networks.

Advertising opportunities will be available on all three of High Fidelity HDTV channels on which Smithsonian Channel HD programming is set to air.
