Maria gains eyeballs

The CBC's Maria performances and results steadily gained popularity. The program may have come last in its Monday time slot, but it beat out all others on Sunday and gave a boost to the pubcaster's sked.

Here are the national winners (for all persons 2+; all times ET), according to BBM/Nielsen, for July 21-27, 2008.

News and daily shows: CTV Evening News at 6 pm hit #6 with an average minute audience of 1.02 million viewers (down from 1.091 million on the previous week’s national chart). Global’s The Young & The Restless at 4:30 pm took #15 with 857,000 (up from 805,000). CTV’s Jeopardy/Access Hollywood at 7:30 pm hit #16 with 782,000 (up from 761,000). Global National at 5:30 pm took #21 with 727,000 (up from 688,000), while News Hour at 6 pm hit #25 with 675,000 (up from 665,000). CTV National News at 11 pm took #24 with 687,000 (up from 675,000).

Monday: CTV’s Canadian Idol at 9 pm hit #3 with 1.192 million (down from 1.308 million) against Global’s House, which took #7 with 980,000 (down from 1.02 million). CTV’s CSI: Miami at 10 pm hit #9 with 950,000 (up from 817,000). Global’s Bones won the 8 pm time slot, taking #13 with 893,000 (down from 916,000). CBC’s Maria results at 8 pm took #28 with 610,000 viewers.

Tuesday: CTV’s Canadian Idol at 8 pm hit #4 with 1.117 million (up from 957,000), while Criminal Minds at 9 pm took #10 with 934,000 (up from 825,000) against Global’s Big Brother, which took #11 with 895,000 (up from 863,000). Global’s Wipeout at 8 pm hit #14 with 886,000 (up from 801,000). CTV’s Law & Order: SVU at 10 pm took #18 with 767,000 (down from 930,000).

Wednesday: CTV’s So You Think You Can Dance, airing 8-10 pm, hit #2 with 1.282 million (up from 1.41 million). The net’s CSI: New York at 10 pm took #8 with 959,000 (down from 1.078 million). Global’s Big Brother at 8 pm hit #22 with 709,000 (down from 753,000).

Thursday: CTV’s So You Think You Can Dance at 9 pm hit #1 with 1.381 million viewers (up from 1.263 million), while Flashpoint took #5 with 1.086 million in its new 10 pm time slot. The net’s CSI at 8 pm hit #12 with 894,000 (up from 825,000).

Friday: No shows on the Top 30.

Saturday: CTV’s weekend evening news programming average for Saturday-Sunday at 6 pm put it at #17 on the national chart with 773,000 viewers (down from 774,000).

Sunday: CBC’s Maria performances at 8 pm hit #19 with 752,000 (up from 655,000), while the pubcaster’s Sunday night movie took #23 with 704,000 (down from 791,000) and news at 11 pm took #29 with 599,000. Global’s Big Brother at 8 pm hit #20 with 738,000 (down from 976,000), while American Dad at 9:30 pm took #26 with 660,000 viewers and Family Guy took #30 with 599,000 (down from 701,000). CTV’s Cold Case at 9 pm took #27 with 629,000 viewers.
