Corus Entertainment has acquired Canadian closed-captioning company FastFile Media Services in order to bolster its technology service offerings.
As part of the new business unit, the media co has launched Quay Media Services, a division charged with leading its linear TV broadcast, signal origination and master control play out and delivery, production facilities, media asset management and encoding/transcoding for both domestic and international customers, as well as closed captioning, described video and subtitling.
“When we had the chance five years ago to move to a new facility and invested in Corus Quay, we invested in a way that included the technology future,” says Scott Dyer, EVP, chief technology officer and president, Nelvana. “That meant including space for expansion on the VOD and digital side, which we thought at that point was likely.”
Dyer says that not all the areas within Quay Media Services are growing at the same rate, but accessibility and encoding are seeing double-digit growth.
The addition of FastFile Media Services adds to the division’s closed captioning and described video offering, which Dyer says is an area of opportunity for sports and news.
