Long-time Rogers Media exec Leslie Sole, who spent 25 years with the Canadian broadcaster, has died.
Sole and his wife Terri Michael, a veteran TV and radio host, were killed in a car crash in Mexico, according to multiple reports.
In a note to the industry, Rogers Media president Rick Brace described Sole, who worked at Rogers from 1987 to 2011, as a “visionary, who passionately loved Canadian television and left an indelible mark on this industry, and on Rogers.”
During his time with the Toronto-based media company, Sole oversaw the expansion of Rogers’ TV division to include five Citytv TV stations, five OMNI-branded TV stations and three specialties. He held a number of roles within the company including CCO of Rogers Media and CEO of Rogers Media’s TV division. He left the company in 2011.
Michael was a radio host on a number of Ontario-based stations earlier in her career, including Toronto-based stations such as CHFI-FM 98.1 and CKFM-FM 99.9. From 2003 to 2011 she was a host on The Biography Channel’s Famous Faces.
“Rogers Media extends its deepest condolences to the entire Sole family on the passing of Leslie and his wife Terri,” added Brace in a statement. “We join with friends and colleagues in the remembrance of this respected media leader, one we were proud to call our own.”
Toronto Mayor John Tory, who worked with Sole and Michael for two decades at Rogers, expressed his condolences in a Tweet. “Both were respected and loved in the broadcasting world,” said Tory, adding that Sole had been a “pioneer.”
