Wavemaker Canada names new CEO

Coming from the software and IT world, Ryan Webber will also join GroupM Canada's executive committee.

Wavemaker Canada has hired Ryan Webber as CEO, effective immediately.

In addition to leading the Wavemaker’s operations in Canada, Webber will serve on GroupM Canada’s executive committee to represent Wavemaker Canadian operations, in addition to the Wavemaker Global Executive Committee board.

Webber’s career spanned software and IT sales prior to moving to Wavemaker, most recently serving as CRO at hospitality platform iLobby for the last year. Before that, he was SVP of sales for the Americas and MENA for SOTI, a global mobility and IoT management company.

“As we continue to build the agencies and industry of the future in Canada, I believe strongly that a critical part of that is to bring in different skillsets and cognitive diversity to empower innovation and new thinking,” says Kevin Johnson, GroupM Canada CEO. “I’m excited to see that in action with Ryan’s perspective and leadership.”

The appointment is unrelated to the global restructuring announced by GroupM Tuesday morning. Webber fills a role previously held by CEO Kristie Painting, who left the agency in March to become country manager for Canada at Pinterest.

Webber will lead this next chapter of Wavemaker in Canada in partnership with the Wavemaker Canada executive committee, consisting of: Andy Braunston, CSO; Patrick Renard, CFO; Cory Chisholm, VP client leadership; Chimi Nwagbara, VP investment; Lisa Pietersen, VP people; and Tracey Weinrib, VP precision marketing.

Wavemaker Canada has seen notable success on the new client front in the last six months, including winning work for Moderna, Beiersdorf, and Corby Spirit and Wine.
