ICYMI: Teads adds local news sites to its portfolio

Plus, Pink Triangle Press continues to add to its senior staff and Vumedia hires a new VP.

Teads brings its InRead ads to Blackburn

Global ad platform Teads has increased its local reach in Southwestern Ontario through a deal with Blackburn Media.

The two-year, exclusive deal will bring Teads’ InRead ad format to MyNewsToday.ca and its associated local news sites for London, Windsor, Sarnia, Chatham-Kent and Midwestern Ontario. The InRead format programmaticaly places display and video ads in-stream on news stories; for Blackburn, the partnership allows it to scale its online inventory and increase video ad monetization with advertisers using Teads’ platform.

The deal adds more local journalism to a roster of other news sites that include CBC, Curiocity, BBC Global News, The Economist, The Washington Post, The Guardian and Vice. Earlier this year, Teads also added Canadian representation for Future’s niche sites, such as TechRadar, Marie Claire and Cycling News. Teads’ platform reaches 29 million people in Canada and 1.9 people globally every month.

Blackburn is one of the oldest media companies in the country, having started in 1852 when Josiah Blackburn purchased what would become the London Free Press. Today, in addition to its local news sites, it also operates 13 radio stations in Southwestern Ontario.

Pink Triangle Press names new editorial lead

Pink Triangle Press, the publisher of 2SLGBTQ+ news and culture site Xtra, has hired Angela Mullins as its new editorial director, effective Sept. 26.

Mullins will work with chief content officer Jennifer McGuire and the rest of Xtra’s editorial team to create content across audio, visual and text formats across platforms.

Mullins has been at The Toronto Star since 2018, most recently as senior editor of digital audience development. In that role, she led a unit she created to engage new audiences across different platforms. She has also been the Star’s senior editor of national news and a managing editor for Metro in both London and Toronto.

Pink Triangle Press has been staffing up its senior ranks in 2022. In addition to hiring McGuire, the former head of CBC News, in January, the company also brought on longtime CBC exec Heaton Dyer as its first chief growth officer in the spring.

Vumedia adds to its leadership team

Beaulieu has been tasked with developing and deploying various marketing strategies for the agency, which specializes in planning and executing ad campaigns through Google and Facebook.
