PPG has extended its partnership with the NHL, staying on board as the league’s official paint supplier in Canada and the U.S.
The company has extended its sponsorship of the league for three more years. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The latest leg of the partnership began on Jan. 2, when PPG was a sponsor of this year’s NHL Winter Classic. The brand was visible through on-site activations, rink boards and in-stadium signage (the game also featured the Pittsburgh Penguins, and PPG is based in Pittsburgh).
From here, PPG’s Dulux, Sico and Glidden paint brands, as well as Olympic stains and the PPG masterbrand, will be featured in the NHL’s new digital rink boards, with a particular focus on the Stanley Cup Playoffs. PPG pointed out in the announcement that the Stanley Cup Playoffs run from late spring to early summer, which is the start of the most active season for painting.
PPG has been an NHL partner since 2017. A key aspect of the sponsorship that began in 2019 will continue is PPG providing a colour-changing coating to all official game pucks, which changes from purple to clear when a pucks temperature is above freezing to let officials know when a puck should be replaced. Also, a PPG coating that is typically used as a protective automotive underbody coating is also used on goal posts to prevent chips and other damage.
