Sing Tao Media Group Canada, which owns Chinese news outlet Sing Tao and operates Sing Tao A1 Chinese Radio, has announced a new leadership team as CEO Calvin Wong readies himself for retirement.
Wong first joined Sing Tao in 2003 as a general manager in its newspaper division, taking on his current role in 2017. The company credits Wong with transitioning the company from a traditional newspaper publisher to a multiplatform content provider, as well as helping the company take a more audience-centric approach. His retirement is effective April 1, though he will remain on the
company’s board of directors.
“‘Dare to dream, dare to do and dare to try’ – Sing Tao Canada’s motto has become mine as well,” Wong said in a statement. “To the tens of thousands of Chinese-Canadians who read its content
and tune into its shows every day, the name ‘Sing Tao’ means relevant and fantastic content, but that is just half of the picture. Sing Tao is also the gateway and vehicle for businesses that want to reach the $61 billion Chinese-Canadian market.”
To fill the CEO role, Sing Tao has promoted Anson Wong, currently the company’s VP of business ventures and general manager of Sing Tao A1 Chinese Radio. Wong joined the company in 2008 as general manager of the company’s radio station, adding VP duties to his title in 2019.
“One area of focus for 2023 will be developing a solutions-based marketing team that will work with clients on acquiring more customers,” Anson Wong said in a statement. “No one knows this audience better than Sing Tao, and I think the company is well positioned to develop effective marketing solutions.”
In addition, Sing Tao has announced a number of promotions on its leadership team, all of which are also effective April 1.
Raphael Lai, currently VP of finance, will become the company’s chief operating officer. Alice Chui, director of sales and marketing for A1 Chinese Radio, will take over Wong’s previous leadership in the radio division as VP of radio, while Leslie Yip, associate publisher and editor-in-chief of eliteGen Magazine, will take over the VP of business solutions role. Lelia Leung, currently director of sales and marketing in the company’s Vancouver office, has been appointed general manager for Western Canada.
Also on the company’s leadership team is Tina Chow, VP of sales and marketing, who will be retaining her role, working closely with Yip to develop the full marketing services it provides advertisers.
Last year, Sing Tao ended print production of its namesake daily newspaper, moving to a fully online format.
“We have seen drastic shifts in consumer behavior and market challenges recently,” Anson Wong added. “Today’s changes are setting a new solid foundation as we evolve to become one of Canada’s leading audience companies.”
