Shelagh Rogers to retire from CBC Radio

The longtime Next Chapter host also helmed several flagship programs over the course of her 43-year career.

Longtime CBC Radio host Shelagh Rogers will be retiring after a 43-year career with the broadcaster.

Her last episode of The Next Chapter, CBC Radio’s literary program, will air on June 24.

Rogers has hosted The Next Chapter since 2008. She first joined CBC Radio Ottawa in 1980, hosting various current affairs and music programming. She moved to Toronto in 1984, filling in various hosting and contributor positions, before becoming the permanent host of national morning show Morningside in 1995. In 2000, she became the host of This Morning; when the program’s timeslot was split two years later, Rogers developed the human interest and interview program Sounds Like Canada, while the news-focused portion became The Current. Rogers hosted Sounds Like Canada until taking over The Next Chapter.

“I just want to give the keys to somebody else and say, ‘This is yours now — just go for it. Go and use all your creativity, your sense of wonder, curiosity and compassion and tell the stories of this complicated, messy and beautiful country,” Rogers said in a statement.

CBC will be searching for a new host for The Next Chapter. In the meantime, it will start a summer edition of the program on July 1, hosted by CBC Books producer and frequent contributor Ryan B. Patrick, featuring new interviews alongside encore segments from the most recent season.
