Spotted! Kayak turns airline safety manuals into etiquette guides

The travel search engine wanted to get some definitive answers about how to behave on a plane.

Now that summer is in full swing, so is summer holiday travel. To help make airline travel more comfortable for all passengers, travel search engine Kayak has released a manual to get the “unspoken rules” of flying in writing.

To compile the manual of dos and don’ts, Kayak turned to blog posts, social platforms, online forums and news outlets to identify the most hotly debated air travel topics. It then enlisted Brandwatch to poll 1,000 travelers on these questions to get some definitive answers.

The manual covers topics such as shoes on or off, who gets the armrests, reclining seats, skipping the security line and blocking the aisle during boarding. Additional findings include leaving any grooming such as flossing or nail care for the washroom; keep socks on and feet on the floor; hold phone calls until getting off the plane; and leave stinky foods at home.

These were then compiled into a seatback manual reminiscent of an aircraft’s usual safety and emergency procedures. A full guide is also available online, while individual travel rules will also be running on digital displays in major airports throughout the summer.
