Stingray is planning to launch a new sports radio station in Edmonton, providing coverage and discussion of the region’s teams after Bell shuttered TSN 1260.
Sports 1440 will broadcast to the Edmonton region out of nearby Wetaskiwin, airing on the frequency previously occupied by W1440, Stingray’s oldies station. The switch will take place on Sept. 5.
Stingray is collaborating on the station with The Nation Network (which owns Edmonton Oilers website Oilers Nation, as well as its associated video and podcast content) and Just a Game Productions (owned by former TSN 1260 host Jason Gregor).
Gregor will be among the station’s on-air hosts, hosting his namesake show from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Additional talent includes former Global Edmonton sports anchor Kevin Karius, who will host the station’s morning block; podcasters Connor Halley and Brandon Douglas, who will host a one-hour fantasy sports-focused program; and The Athletic contributor Allan Mitchell, also known for his long-running Oilers blog Lowetide.
All of the station’s shows will also be distributed as podcasts through The Nation Network.
This will ensure that Edmonton continues to have a sports radio station after Bell Media shut down TSN 1260, one of six the company closed in June. Bell Media previously switched TSN stations in Vancouver and Winnipeg to comedy formats and its station in Hamilton to a BNN Bloomberg station. The stations in Vancouver and in Winnipeg were among those that Bell Media shut down, while Hamilton was sold to a still-undisclosed party. TSN stations in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa are the only ones still broadcasting under the brand.
