After nearly 45 years working in Canadian media – including 35 years at the CBC – Susan Marjetti is retiring from her role as general manager at CBC News. CBC has also announced her replacement: Brodie Fenlon, who started at the public broadcaster ten years ago, will be stepping into the role of general manager and editor in chief.
Before joining the CBC in 2013, Fenlon – who graduated from the journalism program at Western University – was among the journalists to help launch HuffPost Canada, where he served as the managing editor of its news division. Before that, Fenton worked as features editor at the Globe and Mail, as well as other roles in digital news.
Marjetti is stepping down from the role she held since 2020. She first joined the pubcaster in 1988 and has held a wide array of positions at the CBC since, including five years at the helm of CBC Radio and Audio. Her stint there was a productive one wherein she saw the return of the Junos to CBC Music, as well as overseeing the launch of the CBC Listen Platform and CBC Podcasts.
“I offer my deep gratitude to Susan for the leadership she has shown, her unwavering dedication to news and local programming, and her strong commitment to making CBC a more inclusive place for staff and for our audiences. She made a difference and she will be missed,” Barbara Williams, EVP, CBC said in a statement.
“With Susan’s retirement, there is no one better suited and prepared to take the helm of CBC News than Brodie. He is a seasoned journalist and an empathetic leader who will continue to shape the strategic direction of CBC News, guiding the news team through these turbulent times and ensuring that CBC News remains essential to audiences across the country.”
