Barbie Land is infiltrating Toronto. For the first time in Canada, Mattel is bringing the pink Barbie-styled 1957 Chevy Corvette – as seen in the record-breaking film – to the 2024 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto where it will be the centerpiece of a Mattel activation.
Lest all that pink prove too much for attendees, life-sized replicas of Hot Wheels cars will also share the space. The Deora II, Green Loop Coupe, Gray Loop Coupe and a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro will flank Barbie’s classic sports car. According to the AutoShow, the Barbie build features a 283 V8 motor; an interior by Action Vehicle Engineering that includes a dashboard, instrument cluster, custom upholstery on seats, door panels and carpeting and a custom wrap by One11ink.
This isn’t the first time Hot Wheels has participated in the AutoShow – most recently in 2018 for the Hot Wheels 50th Anniversary, and in 2023 for the AutoShow’s 50th Anniversary – but it is the first time both Mattel brands will be showcased together.
“Barbie and Hot Wheels are two beloved Mattel brands with an appeal that spans generations,” says Donna Polimac, senior manager marketing, vehicles, action figures, games and mega at Mattel. “The AutoShow audience is similar [to Mattel’s] – it attracts all ages with one thing in common: a love of cars.”
Because convention-goers won’t be allowed to drive the toy-cars-come-to-life, there will be a life-sized Barbie Box that fans can enter to more fully partake in the toy lifestyle, along with track sets for kids to play with, plus a peak at the up-coming Hot Wheels animated series, Let’s Race, launching on Netflix in March.
