CBC offers 40+ hours of World Figure Skating coverage

It is the first competition to be held in Canada in more than a decade, following the one in London in 2013.

CBC Sports secured the rights to broadcast this year’s World Figure Skating Championships, and will offer more than 40 hours of coverage on its platforms.

Canadians can follow the championship through March 24, with live broadcasts available on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports app. CBC also offers coverage on its TV program CBC Sports Presents, broadcast on CBC TV and CBC Gem.

CBC’s That Figure Skating Show, which features top Canadian and international skaters in the competition, is also available in the country. The show will continue to air during the championship, highlighting fan-favorite skaters, and will culminate with a recap episode on March 25, breaking down the winners of each discipline, the biggest stories and the best moments. It is available on CBC Sports’ YouTube channel, as well as CBC Olympics’ Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

“Our marketers during this programming are consistent with the other big Canadian and global corporate brands that are typically advertisers on CBC platforms,” says a company spokesperson. Some brands that have purchased ad space include IMG and the Skating Club of Boston.

This year’s championship, which runs until March 24 in Montreal, features 200 skaters from more than 40 countries, competing individually or in pairs. This is the first World Figure Skating Championships to be held in Canada in more than a decade, following London in 2013. Montreal was initially scheduled to host the 2020 competition, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic. The last time Montreal hosted the event was in 1932.

Around 1.8 million viewers in Canada tuned into the 2023 championship on CBC live from March 22 to 26.

CBC announces the coverage of this competition after teaming up with the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to be the 53rd annual Juno Awards’ exclusive digital content partner. The awards will air on March 23 on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music and CBC Listen. CBC Music will also be a presenting sponsor of the multi-genre music festival Junofest. As part of its in-person events, it will launch an interactive photo activation at the festival.
