Postmedia launches Puzzmo in Canada

The Canadian media company has partnered with Hearst Newspapers to offer a suite of popular puzzles to readers.

Postmedia is bringing fun and games to Canadians. The publisher has partnered with Hearst Newspapers to bring Puzzmo, a new puzzle games platform created by award-winning game developers Zach Gage and Orta Therox, to Canada.

“We’re excited to offer Puzzmo to Canadians coast-to-coast, including but not limited to Postmedia’s subscribers,” said Duncan Clark, chief content officer at Postmedia. “We know how much our readers enjoy puzzles as part of their subscriptions, and with Puzzmo we’re offering access to some of the most unique and sought-after options for readers and the general public.”

With the partnership, Postmedia becomes the exclusive distributor of The Puzzmo platform in the country. Puzzmo is home to well-loved games like SpellTower, Typeshirt, and Really Bad Chess, among others. While Puzzmo will be free for anyone, there is a paid subscription option, called Puzzmo Plus, which unlocks new games and features in an ad-free experience with access to leaderboards and archives.

Getting into the puzzle business has helped other newspapers gain subscribers. When the New York Times purchased Wordle for seven figures in 2022, the puzzle brought in “an unprecedented tens of millions of new users to The Times,” according to the newspaper. If Puzzmo can bring in a fraction of that, it will be a boon to Postmedia, which continues to struggle financially.
