It’s the end of an era. After a 40-year run, Citytv has decided to pull its lifestyle daytime talk show Cityline off the airwaves.
The news broke Tuesday afternoon when host Tracy Moore revealed in a video to her Instagram followers that the media company would no longer broadcast the daily show.
Instead, she shared, the format will evolve to become a one-hour live show during Breakfast Television, which will expand to run over five hours. Moore will continue on as host, a role she has played since 2008. The re-imagined format will start in September, airing from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on weekdays.
Cityline will run its final episode on Friday, with Moore explaining that this week’s segments will be “celebratory” as the producers bring in former guests, such as past host Marilyn Denis, who appeared on Monday’s episode. Cityline was originally hosted by Dini Petty when it launched in 1984.
“This week’s celebratory episodes are a final sendoff to Cityline and its remarkable 40 years on Canadian television,” Moore said in the video on Instagram, a platform that has changed the way people consume lifestyle and home decor content, alongside others like TikTok.
The decision to end Cityline was not motivated by cost-savings, according to sources that spoke with the Toronto Star. The new show, under the Breakfast Television brand, will have almost the same amount of dedicated resources as the company looks to appeal to advertisers who typically prefer live broadcasts over prepackaged lifestyle shows.
