How sponsors activated around the WNBA in Canada

More than a dozen sponsors signed on to promote the game, include new partners Ace Liquor, Amex, and Gatorade.

This past weekend the WNBA came to Canada and more than a dozen sponsors came with it. The 2024 WNBA Canada Game, presented by Tangerine, featured the Los Angeles Sparks (including Canadian Kia Nurse) defeating the Seattle Storm 84-79 in front of a sold out Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm match-up marked the second time the league has come to Canada. Tangerine, Air Canada, Bell, Canadian Tire, DoorDash, Peace Collective and Sun Life returned as sponsors. They were joined this year by Ace Liquor, Amex, Gatorade, Maybelline New York, Roots, and Subway.

For this year’s event, Tangerine created memorable experiences across Edmonton, including “Ball Drops” where fans could win prizes, and it also projected WNBA logos at several prominent locations in the city to “visually represent the growth of basketball in Canada,” according to the brand. These light activations were brought to life via a collaboration between agency The Local Collective (TLC) and Calgary-based Studio Luma.

As for the other brand partners, Ace Liquor promoted the match-up across social platforms and gave fans chances to win instant prizes with interactive games set up on the concourse of Rogers Place; in advance of the game, Air Canada flew  U-17 girls basket-ball team from Calgary to Edmonton on a WNBA Fan Flight, while also granting a 12% discount on all flights to and from Edmonton. Amex celebrated female entrepreneurs with its WNBA Goods presented by Amex retail platform that sold WNBA-themed merch from women-owned businesses. Bell, DoorDash, Subway, and Sun Life will all host basketball clinics for different groups, led by the WNBA.
