CFL’s first-ever augmented livestreams come to TSN

The league games will feature Genius Sports' full suite of AI tools, which powers NFL and NBA broadcasts.

The Canadian Football League (CFL) regular season and post-season, as well as the Grey Cup in November, will be available as augmented live streams on Bell Media’s TSN+, a digital service on TSN’s website and app. Its first-ever augmented broadcasts will air on June 20, with the Ottawa Redblacks visiting the Montreal Alouettes for their home opener.

Thanks to the CFL and Players’ Association partnership with TSN, Genius and Wilson, the league games will include player-tracking technology and microchip-implanted footballs that will provide viewers with data and visualizations.

The live streams will feature the full suite of AI tools from Genius Sports (which has partnered with TSN before), which power broadcasts of other leagues’ games such as the NFL (pictured) and NBA. Genius technology, which automatically synchronizes billions of data points with live video in real time, will allow players on the field to be identified by name and position, and their speeds will be measured.

All functions will be viewed in real time as the action unfolds. Additional information will be available to viewers as the season progresses.

TSN+ partners with the CFL after reaching an agreement with the NFL in January of last year to offer augmented broadcasts of the leagues’ games and events, including the Super Bowl. The enhanced broadcasts available on TSN+ are in addition to the live game coverage on TSN, CTV, CTV2 and RDS, which air games nationwide in all league broadcast windows.

CFL has also announced updates to its products to enhance the viewing experience and appeal to a wider audience. For example, active player bios on its website now include transaction histories to show their complete journeys throughout the league. CFL Connect, the league’s media portal for statistics and information, has been updated to be faster and more reliable. And Play-by-play summaries have been enhanced to include team timeouts, catch points, challenges, automatic reviews and turnovers on plays.
