Corus cancels Big Brother Canada after 12 seasons

The reality competition series would not be renewed for an additional season.

Corus Entertainment has cancelled Big Brother Canada after 12 seasons.

The broadcaster announced Thursday (June 27) that it made the decision not to renew the series for an additional season.

“As the industry landscape continues to shift, we must shift with it and make some hard decisions when looking at all our programming on Global, and across our portfolio,” said Corus co-CEO Troy Reeb in a statement to Playback Daily.

Big Brother Canada is produced by Boat Rocker-owned Insight Productions. It first premiered on Slice before moving exclusively to Global in season four. The series notably went on a hiatus after its fifth season, but was put back on the schedule for season six after an outcry from fans.

Longtime host Arisa Cox was made an executive producer in 2020 as the show increased its on-screen racialized representation. The series brought in a record-breaking 11 sponsors for its 12th, and final, season.

Reeb issued a full statement on the ending of the series below:

“Today as we say goodbye to the beloved series, we celebrate the great success and impact Big Brother Canada has had in our country and in the Canadian media landscape for over a decade. Global will always be proud to have been home to Big Brother Canada for 12 seasons, and we are grateful to our partners at Banijay Rights for their support and guidance, and Insight Productions for their passion, dedication, and creativity. We would like to thank Executive Producer Erin Brock and Host and Executive Producer Arisa Cox for always leading thought-provoking conversations, telling uniquely Canadian stories, and reflecting the diverse culture of Canada in one of television’s biggest social experiments. This series, and the production team behind it, have truly set the bar in creating entertaining unscripted television. And finally, to our #BBCAN fanbase, you have all kept the series thriving and we thank you for joining us on this journey for the last 12 seasons.”
