The final numbers are in and CBC reports that seven in 10 Canadians (27 million) tuned into CBC/Radio-Canada’s broadcast coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, including record-breaking audiences viewing via digital platforms over the 17 days of the Games. For the duration of the Games, CBC was the most-watched network among all Canadians 2+ as well as the 25 to 54 demo according to Numeris data.
Digital audiences consumed a total of 24.3 million video hours of Paris 2024 content on CBC/Radio-Canada digital and streaming platforms, a 170% increase over Tokyo 2020 and 121% over Beijing 2022. Time spent streaming Olympic content on CBC Gem increased 307% from Tokyo 2020 and 245% from Beijing 2022 with connected TV viewing accounting for about 65% of the total time spent streaming Paris 2024 content on CBC Gem.
Coverage of Sunday’s Closing Ceremony reached 12 million viewers in Canada across English and French TV networks, and average viewership of the Closing Ceremony on CBC was more than double compared to the Tokyo 2020 Closing Ceremony. The broadcast of the Opening Ceremony attracted 13.3 million Canadians across English and French TV networks, with average viewership on CBC up 33% compared to the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony and an increase 36% compared to Beijing 2022.
More than 2.5 million Canadians watched the end of the Closing Ceremony to see Tom Cruise jump out of a plane to take the Olympic flag to the 2028 Summer Olympics location, Los Angeles.
CBC/Radio-Canada will announce details soon regarding coverage of the Paralympic Games Paris 2024, which will take place from Wednesday, August 28 to Sunday, September 8. CBC/Radio-Canada is Canada’s Olympic Network through 2032 and Paralympic network through 2026.
