Corus lays off more staff in small and large markets

Cuts have been made at Global News and Corus Radio operations across the country.

Corus Entertainment is continuing to streamline operations by making more staff cuts to its Global News and Corus Radio divisions in Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto, as well as some smaller markets across Canada.

However, the media company is being tight-lipped about how many workers have been affected.

“We can confirm that as part of our efficiency review, and in order to streamline operations and continue to deliver audiences with premium news and audio content, we have made changes in some markets across the Global News and Corus Radio divisions,” a Corus spokesperson tells MiC. “More information on impacts to programming and upcoming changes to come.”

Corus Entertainment’s Q1 2025 results that were released last month showed a 12% revenue drop in that quarter. TV revenue was down 11% from the same time last year, from $342.4 million to $303.6 million. Radio revenue was down 14% year-over-year, from $27.5 million to $23.5 million.

Looking ahead to Q2 2025, Corus expects year-over-year declines in television advertising revenue to be similar to the first quarter of fiscal 2025 due to oversupply of premium digital video inventory from foreign competitors and lower demand for linear advertising. Amortization of TV program rights in Q2 is expected to increase in the low double digits YoY. As a result, in Q2 Corus will continue with cost cuts and expects a 5% to 10% decline in general and administrative expenses versus last year.

The Corus property portfolio includes 30 specialty television services, 37 radio stations, 15 conventional television stations, digital and streaming platforms, and social digital agency and media services. Its roster of brands includes Global Television, W Network, Flavour Network, Home Network, The History Channel, Showcase, Slice, Adult Swim, National Geographic and Global News, along with streaming platforms StackTV, Teletoon+, the Global TV App and Curiouscast.
