Meta launches standalone AI app

According to the tech giant, the app is powered by Llama 4, the latest version of Meta's large language model (LLM).

Meta has launched a standalone app for its Meta AI assistant, Meta AI, is now integrated into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. Now the assistant can be used without those services on the mobile app, website and Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Meta AI, which was first launched in September 2023, is a chatbot and AI assistant developed by Meta that answers questions, generates images and acts as a personal assistant. According to Meta, the app now offers a more personalized and social AI experience with responses based on context and other user-specific elements related to the user’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The app is powered by Llama 4, the latest version of Meta’s large language model (LLM), and is designed around voice conversations. Llama 4 was created in answer to rival AI models from OpenAI, Google, Deepseek and Anthropic, but with improved reasoning and multilingual capabilities, Meta says.

The standalone app integrates with other Meta AI features such as image generation and editing, all of which can now be done through a voice or text conversation with the AI assistant. It also includes a Discover feed that features Meta AI interactions that other people such as friends on Instagram and Facebook have opted to share.

The free app is available via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for Android and iOS devices. Users need an account to access various features on the app but as of now, there isn’t a subscription model for the AI app.
