Election coverage: CBC and CTV hit record-breaking viewership numbers

CTV tops conventional network ratings, while CBC digital platforms break records.

CTV led Monday evening’s live federal election coverage as the most-watched conventional network, averaging 1.2 million viewers and outpacing its closest competitor by 35%, according to Numeris.

CTV’s prime-time federal election special, Election 2025, topped all networks on Monday night, delivering the most-watched election night special and record-breaking digital platform results. The special, broadcast on CTV, CTV News Channel, CP24 and BNN Bloomberg, drew an average audience of over 1.8 million viewers in the midnight coverage window, outperforming its closest competitor by 6%.

Anchored by CTV’s chief news anchor and senior editor Omar Sachedina and chief political correspondent Vassy Kapelos, the special also dominated the 25 to 54 demographic, surpassing its nearest competitor by 12%.

Overall, CTV News’ Election 2025 special reached a total of 9.1 million unique Canadian viewers.

CTV News’ election day streaming coverage saw also a significant surge, with a five-fold increase compared to the 2021 federal election. On April 28, CTV News digital platforms recorded 16.1 million page views and 3.8 million video views, setting a new single-day record. The network’s live election updates article attracted over 2.1 million page views, marking the highest traffic for any CTV News live blog in a single day.

CBC’s digital coverage of the federal elections also achieved record-breaking viewership numbers.

Numeris data shows that CBC’s digital platforms saw record-breaking engagement on April 28, with Canadians spending 3.5 million hours on cbcnews.ca and CBC News app. That day also brought 8 million unique visitors to the site and app, with video views surging 127% compared to the 2021 federal election coverage.

CBC’s election special, Canada Votes: 2025 Election Special, was streamed 5.2 million times across multiple platforms, including cbcnews.ca, CBC News app, CBC Gem, CBC News YouTube and CBC News TikTok. Video views on CBC Gem rose 130% compared to the 2021 federal election special, while the CBC News YouTube channel saw a 228% increase, reaching 3.2 million total views.

On the TV side, CBC and CBC News Network drew significant viewership for the 2025 election special, with 7.14 million Canadians tuning in. The networks averaged 1.25 million viewers for 2 minutes or more, representing a 25% increase from the 2021 federal election special. Viewership peaked at 10:11 p.m. when 2.63 million viewers watched senior political correspondent Rosemary Barton’s announcement of the projected Liberal government.

Meanwhile on radio, CBC also saw increased engagement, with 1.4 million listeners tuning in for election coverage, representing an 11% rise from 2021.
