Disney+ is making Hulu its global general entertainment brand, replacing its Star tile on the streamer internationally and in Canada this fall.

The news of Hulu’s international rollout was announced on Wednesday by CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston during the Walt Disney Company’s Q3 earnings call. A Disney spokesperson told Playback Daily that the international Star rebranding includes Canada, with further details specific to the Canadian market to be announced this fall.

The current content under Star includes Disney Television Studios, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television, ABC and FX. Disney, which previously held two-thirds of Hulu, closed its deal with Comcast this June, acquiring the remaining stake that was held by NBCUniversal.

Hulu has previously only been available in the U.S. and its territories with originals such as The Handmaid’s Tale licensed to separate streaming services in Canada.

During the earnings call, Iger and Johnston said the company will be making improvements to the Disney+ app over the coming months, adding new features and a personalized homepage.

As for Disney’s Cancon plans, the company posted a job opening this May for a Toronto-based director of development who will lead the execution of a Canadian content strategy for Disney+.

The director will “serve as lead commissioner for Disney+ Canadian original content, with a focus on scripted and premium unscripted series,” and act as the primary liaison with Canadian production partners, funding bodies and regulatory stakeholders. The posting is still available and Disney had not confirmed if anyone had been hired to the role at press time.
