Everything old is new again as Leno airs live commercial

Might the answer to ad skipping be heading back to the future?

This evening, what has to be one of a tiny number of commercials to be aired live since the ’50s will be broadcast on The Tonight Show on NBC.

The client is Garmin International, which markets GPS-type devices. And the shtick for the 30-second spot will have Jay Leno’s announcer, John Melendez, appearing in a lab coat to discuss how Garmin devices can be the cure for ‘direction disorder,’ an ailment that prevents men from asking for directions.

Goes without saying that we Canucks won’t get to see the goofy experiment. But if it’s deemed a success, maybe a brave Canadian will give this a shot. Strombo would be a natural. As for the right marketer, hmmm…
