Calgary-based mobile ticketing solutions company RepeatSeat has bought the mobile movie search engine MyMovies.ca from Don’t Shoot the Messenger, a Milton, Ontario-based company that debuted the service in 2000.
RepeatSeat believes the buy will put it in an ‘industry-leading position’ at the centre of the expanding mobile content market in Canada. MyMovies.ca lists movie info for more than 400 theatre locations and 2,400 screens across Canada. In the past year, MyMovies.ca has attracted over two million hits (about 200,000 per month) from 25,000 unique visitors.
RepeatSeat president and COO Bob Christianson says the acquisition will enable his company to provide ‘a more complete mCommerce solution in Canada,’ and that the service has potential for expansion to include US movie times and ticketing. He says MyMovies.ca will integrate well with RepeatSeat’s mobile ticketing solutions, allowing users to ‘take the next logical step and purchase a ticket to the movie they searched.’
After launching MyMovies.ca, Don’t Shoot the Messenger followed with other mobile search sites, including MyTVGuide.ca (for programming info) and MyGasStation.ca, which helps cell phone users find cheap gas prices.
