Global has greenlit three of its Canadian series for second seasons: The Guard, ‘da Kink in my Hair and The Best Years. The soon-to-be sophomore shows will be slated for the net’s 2008-09 broadcast sked.
Canwest Broadcasting reports the three shows were ‘proven performers’ with ‘solid statistics’ in their first seasons. Production on the second seasons will begin in the coming weeks. SVP drama and factual content Christine Shipton says the decision shows that the company’s ‘commitment to bringing Canadian drama back to Canwest remains firm.’
The Guard (pictured) launched with over 800,000 viewers and ranked as the #1 new Canadian Original in the key demo Adults 18-49. The Best Years, airing last summer, increased viewership from the premiere to the finale by 30% for 2+ and by 54% in the key A18-49 demo nationally.
The net reports ‘da Kink in my Hair resonated strongly with urban audiences. The show ranked #1 in new comedies of the season, topping CBC’s Sophie and Jpod in Toronto by 16% and 88% respectively; and outranking new episodes of CTV’s Corner Gas for key demos in the market in January 2008.
In the meantime, Global is set to premiere the fourth season of Boston Legal (previously on E!) on Tuesday, April 8 at 10 pm, leading out of Big Brother. And Global’s Canterbury’s Law has moved to Fridays at 9 pm (replaced tonight by a re-run of House) – this after Fox debuted the series in the US to dismal ratings.
