CTV orders more Flashpoint

Following boffo numbers on both sides of the border for its rookie season, the Canadian broadcaster has green lit a second season for the Toronto-set action series.

Flashpoint will go into production on a second season of the shot-in-Toronto action series early next year after CTV ordered 13 more episodes of the prime-time hit yesterday.

The move was anything but a surprise, given the brag-worthy ratings on both sides of the border last month. The identifiably Toronto-set cop drama has consistently averaged 1.1 million viewers on CTV since its premiere on July 11, while US caster CBS nabbed an average 7 million viewers.

Originally slotted for the Friday 10 pm time slot, Flashpoint was promoted to Thursdays in its third week, to build on its success (all numbers 2+).

‘We’re extremely proud to have this opportunity to bring more of our homegrown stories to viewers in Canada and around the world,’ commented executive producers Anne Marie La Traverse and Bill Mustos in a release.

‘Viewers have embraced Flashpoint and we are answering their call for more. The cast and creative team have delivered a series that not only entertains with high-intensity drama but with heart as well,’ added CTV programming boss Susanne Boyce.

No word so far on whether CBS is on board for a second season, although president Nina Tassler hinted last month that the net may be interested.

The series, about members of an elite police task force, has sold to over 50 territories worldwide, including France, Germany, Italy and Latin America.
