There’s a 3D elephant in the room

75 years after Babar the elephant made his book debut, Nelvana is giving him the 3D treatment in a new animated series, The New Adventures of Babar.

Babar is going 3D in The New Adventures of Babar. The latest version of the evergreen franchise, a 26-ep animated series from Nelvana, is slated for delivery to YTV between fall 2010 and spring 2011.

The 3D toon explores the relationship between grandparents and grandkids through King Babar and his adventure-seeking, eight-year-old grandson. Other new characters being introduced are the grandson’s friends, like the monkey Chiku, porcupine Monroe, zebra Zawadi and hyena Jake.

Babar is inspired by the kid lit series from Jean and Laurent de Brunhof, and Nelvana previously produced a 2D Babar series from 1989-91 and more eps from 2000-01, which are still broadcast internationally.
