Lawyers, Shattered set for Showcase

The cable channel is getting two new crime series from Canwest, which has picked up the Whizbang Films vehicle.

Showcase is getting two new crime series in 2009/10 from Canwest, which has picked up the Whizbang Films vehicle Lawyers Guns and Money, and E1 Entertainment’s Shattered.

The 13-ep shows are the latest additions to the Canwest slate, following the drama series Copper, which will debut on Global in the fall and was scooped up by ABC last week.

The Hamilton, Ont.-set Lawyers follows young claims adjuster Jimmy Burns as he finesses his way around insurance scams and the criminal underworld while trying to escape his past. The series stars Luke Kirby (Slings and Arrows), Clark Johnson (The Shield), and Caroline Cave (ReGenesis). It was created by Malcolm MacRury (Deadwood, Republic of Doyle), who also acts as showrunner and exec produces with Whizbang cohorts Paul Gross and Frank Siracusa.

Shattered features Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) as a former star cop, now a damaged recluse, who solves crimes through the use of his multiple-personality disorder. Executive producers are Hugh and Debra Beard from Force Four Films (Human Cargo) and Noreen Halpern, John Morayniss and Laszlo Barna for E1 Entertainment, which will handle worldwide distribution.

‘We’re incredibly excited about these series and are looking forward to working with our talented production partners to get them on the airways this fall,’ commented Canwest SVP of drama and factual content Christine Shipton in a release.
