It’s liftoff stateside for Defying Gravity after ABC acquired the 13-part sci-fi drama series for its summer schedule from Vancouver producer Omni Film Productions and co-venture partner Fox Television Studios.
Canadian broadcasters CTV and Space, as well as the BBC and Germany’s ProSieben, have already picked up the Vancouver-based series about eight astronauts on a six-year mission through the solar system.
Gravity has an international ensemble cast led by Ron Livingston and Canadian Laura Harris (24), who play former lovers trapped together in space.
Omni Film’s Brian Hamilton and Michael Chechik share the executive producer credits on Gravity with James Parriott (Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty) and Michael Edelstein (Desperate Housewives).
Edelstein and Parriott based Gravity on the BBC docudrama Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets. The co-producers aim to do another two seasons, if the series performs on ABC and internationally.
Gravity joins three earlier CTV series on or headed to US network schedules: CBS’ Flashpoint and The Bridge and NBC’s The Listener.
A specific air date might be announced this week, says CTV.
