Discovery Channel invites fans to be awesome

The channel celebrates its 15th anniversary with a one-hour TV special in January, and fans can send web-video shout-outs for the chance to see them aired live during the show.

When you like a TV channel a lot, you sing about it, right?

Well, we MiC‘ers don’t (often) tend to, but custom-made fan ditties about Discovery Channel have been part of the response to the channel’s recently launched anniversary promotion, ’15 Years of Awesome.’

The promotion is in support of a one-hour special program airing Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. ET called, appropriately, 15 Years of Awesome. Starting in late November, Discovery invited fans to submit videos of their favourite Discovery moments or shows, or even to wish the channel a happy birthday. Fans can upload their videos to the channel’s social-media-style Planet You site, some of which will be selected to air during the Jan. 4 special.

15 Years of Awesome will be hosted by Daily Planet‘s Jay Ingram and will feature best-of clips from the show’s 15-year history in Canada, behind-the-scenes footage, viewer-submitted video and celebrity well-wishes.

The anniversary promotion continues after the special airs, as viewers will be invited to vote on their favourite Discovery Presents special for an encore broadcast. Starting Jan. 4, fans can vote on their episode of choice on the anniversary microsite, and the winning episode will air March 7 at 8 p.m. ET.

15 Years of Awesome is currently being promoted via video and online banners on the Discovery Channel site and via a microsite. On-air promotion of the special starts today, and it will also be promoted via Discovery Channel email blasts, which go out to 17,000 subscribers.
