CTV, Global unveil summer skeds

Homegrown drama Rookie Blue headlines primetime Thursday for Global, while CTV welcomes back So You Think You Can Dance and new eps of Hiccups, Dan.

It’s the season of the Canuck cop drama on private nets CTV and Global with no fewer than three shows slated to air in simulcast with a US broadcaster, as the networks recently revealed their summer plans.

Global debuts Rookie Blue (formerly known as Copper) on Thursday, June 24 at 9 p.m. in lockstep with ABC. The series from E1 Entertainment follows the lives of five young rookies just out of the police academy. Meanwhile, CTV will re-air the first season of The Bridge beginning Saturday, July 10 at 8 p.m. and the remainder of the sophomore season of Flashpoint on Fridays beginning June 4 – both concurrent with CBS. All three cop series are shot in Toronto.

CTV also welcomes back perennial favorite So You Think You Can Dance, which airs its seventh season on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning May 27. The American version of the reality dance competition premiered to nearly two million viewers (2+) last summer on the broadcaster.

Among new series on CTV’s summer sked is the ABC drama Scoundrels – about a family of small-time criminals – set for Sundays at 9 p.m. beginning June 20; and game show Downfall, in which contestants answer a series of trivia questions against the clock. It premieres Tuesday, June 22 at 9 p.m.

The broadcaster will also air the remainder of the first season of comedies Hiccups and Dan for Mayor on Mondays beginning June 7, with the season finales set for June 28. Also returning with new episodes is Degrassi: The Next Generation, which will wrap up its summer run on CTV with a two-hour movie entitled D: NYC – Degrassi Takes Manhattan.

Crime procedural Law & Order: CI also returns for its ninth season on June 20.

New summer fare on Global includes the Fox buddy cop comedy The Good Guys, starring Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Colin Hanks (Orange County), making its debut on Monday, June 7 at 9 p.m., followed by the third season of crime drama In Plain Sight at 10 p.m.

Among reality programs, Global will air the marathon 12th season of Big Brother on Thursdays beginning July 8, while season three of Wipeout premieres Tuesday, June 22 at 8 p.m.

Crime series Lie to Me returns on June 7 where it will counter CTV’s comedy hour. Global has also slotted season one of the medical drama Hawthorne, starring Jada Pinkett Smith, for Fridays beginning June 18.
