Sportsnet picks up puck in Alberta

The network inks a 10-year regional broadcast and digital media deal for Flames and Oilers games.

Rogers Sportsnet has inked a 10-year deal with Alberta’s twin National Hockey League teams, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, to become their official local TV broadcaster and digital media provider.

The pact, to run to 2020, will see the regional cable channel air at least 58 Flames and 58 Oilers games each season in its western Canadian TV footprint, including Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Sportsnet deal is for regional rights only, and comprises games not airing nationally on the TSN and CBC networks as part of separate national broadcast rights deals.

The Sportsnet agreement also means Oilers and Flames fans will no longer rely on pay-per-view broadcasts to view games not airing on the CBC and TSN schedules.

TSN will unveil its upcoming NHL season schedule on Monday.
