The daily and community newspapers currently owned by Canwest Global Communications Corp. will soon exist under the name Postmedia Network Inc., Paul Godfrey, National Post president and CEO, announced late Friday.
The new name will come into effect upon the closing of the acquisition of Canwest’s publishing division, spearheaded by Godfrey and a group of creditors. The transaction acquiring the publishing entity from Canwest LP, which includes the National Post, 10 metro dailies like the Calgary Herald and the Ottawa Citizen, 26 community newspapers and about 50 websites like Driving.ca, Working.com and Dose.ca, is expected to be completed later this month when the company emerges from creditor protection.
Postmedia Network is a trademark that is meant to reflect the current evolution of the industry in a ‘post-media’ universe, the ‘posting’ of news and info online, as well as the retro delivery method via ‘post,’ explained Godfrey, in a news release.
‘Our new name reflects both the strong legacy and the exciting future of media as we prepare to emerge as a new Canadian business,’ he said.
Shaw Communications, which is acquiring Canwest’s broadcasting division, owns the trademark assets of the Canwest properties.
