Nokia enters into City Battle with BlogTO

Freshdaily, an online media company that operates city blogs in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, has incorporated a popular 'Best of' list into a national contest, sponsored by Nokia.

Which Canadian band is the hottest: Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire or the New Pornographers? One may not necessarily base their decision on where the band is from (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, respectively) except that bragging rights for the whole city may rest on their pick.

In a new contest from Nokia and Freshdaily, the media company that runs city culture and food news blogs BlogTO.com, Beyondrobson.com in Vancouver, and Midnightpoutine.ca in Montreal, readers are asked to vote for the ‘best’ in 97 categories that range from best BBQ Chicken to Best Scandal, in order to collect points individually for the chance to win prizes like the Nokia N97 Mini. A city-wide tally is also kept on the Facebook pages, of BlogTO, Byond Robson and Midnight Poutine, where the contest is hosted.

With the sponsorship arranged by Carat, ads promoting the contest will run on all three of Freshdaily’s properties. Points can also be earned by individuals by inviting friends to join the group, or by participating in the Nokia national minibus tour – a related campaign promoting the same product.

‘One of things we’re really known for is our Best of City lists,’ says Tim Shore, publisher of Freshdaily, which receives about 450,000 monthly unique visitors across all three properties, the majority of them on BlogTO.com. All sites target 20- to 35-year-old urbanites. ‘So we’ve integrated Nokia in subtle ways into the contest. They’re running their own minivan tour across the country, so it ties in very well to what they’re doing,’ he tells MiC.

This the first contest where all three of Freshdaily’s blogs have been incorporated into a contest, and Shore says he hopes it will generate publicity for Midnightpoutine.ca and Beyondrobson.com, which are the younger of the three. The blogs have recently undergone redesigns – Midnightpoutine.ca unveiled theirs last week, while BlogTO.com and Beyondrobson.com unveiled theirs in the spring.
