The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town saw its audiences plummet on CBC half-way through an eight-week run, up against the new-look Toronto Maple Leafs and the highly anticipated premiere of the final season of Lost.
After a high-flying debut of one million viewers on Jan. 12, viewers for the sketch comedy troupe’s latest sank to 406,000 last Tuesday at 9 p.m. It was a tough night for the Kids, which aired opposite the return of Lost on CTV, with 1.7 million viewers. Lost‘s numbers are up from last season’s premiere of 913,000, when it aired on CTV’s secondary channel A. (All numbers 2+)
The Kids were also up against the Leafs, which drew 866,000 viewers for their win over the New Jersey Devils on Rogers Sportsnet. It was the first game after a shake-up of the Leafs’ roster in which Toronto acquired defenseman Dion Phaneuf and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
Other new CBC series The Republic of Doyle and 18 to Life fared slightly better. Despite opposition from CTV’s American Idol, detective series Doyle fetched 600,000 viewers on Wednesday at 9 p.m., while comedy Life followed with 577,000 viewers on Monday at 8 p.m. versus House on Global.
As expected, the numbers for both series are down from their premieres in early January, when private nets had yet to premiere new and returning winter shows. Doyle generated nearly a million viewers for its debut, while Life saw an average 779,000 tune in.
The CBC series will go on hiatus next week, going into repeats for the duration of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on CTV.
