Globe and Mail adds BC Sunday edition for Games

The national newspaper is adding a Sunday edition to its weekly lineup in BC for three Sundays in February to reach local and visiting Olympic followers.

BC-based Globe and Mail readers who look to their paperless Sundays with sadness will be pleased to know that the national newspaper will be adding a Sunday edition to its publication schedule for three Sundays in February.

The paper announced today that it will print a Sunday edition for three of its biggest markets in BC (Lower Mainland, Whistler and Victoria) on Feb. 14, 21 and 28 as part of its ‘plan to provide the most complete and comprehensive coverage of the Games,’ a release on the announcement states.

It will be the only seven-day newspaper in the region, and the move will mark a first for the paper, Phillip Crawley, publisher and CEO, the Globe and Mail, said in a release.

‘The Olympic Winter Games will be an historic moment for Canada and also for the Globe and Mail as we publish a Sunday edition for the first time in our history,’ he said.

That means advertisers will be better able to plan continuous campaigns during the Games, Jim Jennings, GM and associate publisher, British Columbia, tells MiC. ‘There’s a consistency factor that they won’t be able to get in other media outlets.’

The paper will be available via home delivery, online, and at over 1,000 retail outlets in Vancouver, Whistler and Victoria. The circulation in BC is approximately 70,00, according to Jennings.

The Globe and Mail is the national print partner for the Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium. Special coverage for the Games will include a dedicated Olympic Winter Games section in all editions of the newspaper nationally as well as online coverage via GlobeandMail.com.
