New shows offer love, marriage and an accountant

CTV and Citytv are set to premiere two new US comedies, while Global's unveiling its Toronto-shot anthology series featuring cult filmmaker John Waters.

Citytv is putting David Spade’s Rules of Engagement into its Monday night prime-time line-up on April 2, airing it at 9 pm ET/PT in Toronto and Vancouver, 8 pm CT in Winnipeg and 10:30 pm MT in Edmonton and Calgary. The half-hour comedy from Spin City XP Tom Hertz looks at the relationships of married couples and a single guy, played by Spade. Other cast members include Dawson’s Creek‘s Bianca Kajlich and Seinfeld‘s Patrick Warburton. In the US, Rules of Engagement premiered on CBS in February and outperformed Fox’s 24 in its first Sunday night 9 pm time slot. The show’s most recent audience numbers from south of the border were 12.51 million, just slightly below NBC’s Deal or No Deal.

Global’s next new series is Love You To Death, an anthology starring cult filmmaker John Waters as the ‘Groom Reaper.’ The net has confirmed a March 21 premiere date, putting it in the 10:30 pm ET/PT time slot. The 13-episode show, inspired by true crimes, spotlights marriages that have ended in murder. It is produced by Toronto- and LA-based Blueprint Entertainment and was shot in and around the Greater Toronto Area. In the US, the series is premiering under a different title, ‘Til Death Do Us Part, on CourtTV (click here for the microsite.)

Over at CTV, Andy Richter’s latest show, Andy Barker P.I., premieres in the Sunday 5:30 pm ET time slot on March 18. Known as Conan O’Brien’s late-night sidekick, Richter plays an accountant who is mistaken as a private investigator and then runs with the opportunity, leading a double life. O’Brien is co-writer and XP on this effort, which may lead to the some success Richter’s previous shows lacked. Fox’s Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Quintuplets were cancelled after low ratings.
