The Fight Network buys MMA Expo

The TV channel is expanding out of broadcast and into events with the acquisition.

The Fight Network is launching an events division after acquiring Mixed Martial Arts Expo, a combat sports consumer show in Canada.

Fight Media, the parent of The Fight Network now led by president and CEO Leonard Asper, said MMA Expo president Gerald Chopik will join the company as president of its newly launched events division.

The MMA Fan Expo, launched in 2005, is a consumer event for combat sport fans, complete with martial arts tournaments and demonstrations, and retail sales of apparel, gear and fitness and nutrition products.

Asper recently took the helm at The Fight Network by acquiring a major stake in the TV channel, along with Loudon Owen of Mayhem Media and McLean Watson Capital, and Ed Nordholm, a media industry adviser and financier.
