Corus buys two CanWest radio stations

One station in Winnipeg and another in Kitchener have officially changed hands.

CanWest MediaWorks has officially sold two radio stations – Winnipeg’s 99.1 Cool FM (CJZZ) and Kitchener, Ontario’s 91.5 The Beat FM (CKBT) – to Corus Entertainment for $15 million. The deal was in the works last October, but the CRTC has now approved the sale.

Corus Already owns CJOB and Power 97 in Winnipeg. The company does not, at this time, plan to change Cool FM’s Jazz format, which sponsors the Jazz Winnipeg Festival, but a rebranding is reportedly in the works.

According to BBM Canada’s second survey of radio markets, released on July 17, Cool FM measured 2.3% of hours tuned in Winnipeg for the A12+ demo, 2.7% for the W25-54 demo, and 2% in the M25-54 demo. CJOB led the pack in Winnipeg with 17% in A12+, 12% in M25-54, and 8.5% in W25-54. Power 97 held 12.8% for M25-54, 5% for W25-54, and 7.3% for A12+.
