Sirius Satellite Radio Canada has developed the first satellite radio mobile application in Canada, available this week for free to iPhone and iPod Touch users. Offered for free from the Apple App Store and the Sirius site, the app allows consumers to listen to Sirius news, sports, entertainment and commercial-free music on their phones.
A free 14-day trail period is currently being offered to Canadian iPhone and iPod Touch users who don’t have Sirius accounts, promoted via a social media campaign and Sirius e-newsletters to existing customers.
The goal of the app’s development was to expand Sirius’s reach to mobile customers, especially now that the iPhones are available through multiple carriers, Alan Macnevin, VP of customer experience, Sirius, told MiC. If the demand is there, Sirius plans to develop a package specifically for Canadians who want to have the content exclusively accessible on their Apple device.
When the US version of the app was released, it was downloaded over one million times in the first two weeks of its availability, a release stated.
Although Sirius Satellite Radio is commercial-free, the company does maintain a number of sponsorship agreements with companies such as the CFL, NFL, NASCAR and NLL. Currently there are no advertising or content integration opportunities available for the app.
