Get out the popcorn.

Canwest Global Communications on Monday secured approval for a category 2 specialty channel licence from the CRTC to launch an as-yet untitled action/adventure TV service.

The successful application was jointly made by Canwest Television GP and Canwest Media to operate a national, English-language specialty channel devoted to popular fare from ‘popcorn’ action and adventure films and TV series to ‘classical westerns, rodeos and western horse shows,’ the CRTC said in a ruling Monday.

Canwest Global told the CRTC it is ready to launch the new specialty service, after securing a distribution deal with at least one unspecified carrier.

No word on whether that carrier could be Shaw Communications, which is set to acquire control of Canwest Global after the CRTC rules on the proposed takeover as early as this week.
