Canadian eyewear brand Kits is spoofing true-crime podcasts to explore the overpriced eyewear industry and the reasons behind it.
“Nothing To See Here: The Dark and Invisible Truth of the Eyewear Industry” is a three-episode series that explains how the eyewear industry is mostly controlled by a single company, leading to eyewear that can be marked up by as much as 1,000%. The episodes will also explore the false manufacturing claims and the monopoly that exists within the industry.
“I worked on the inside of this industry for years. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. And anyone who’s worked at ‘Big Eyewear’ will tell you how secretive everyone is about what goes on in there,” said Roger Hardy, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Kits. “This podcast is a great way for us to give people the truth they deserve, and have a little fun along the way.”
The target audience for the brand is women aged 18-45.
Partnerships with over 400 influencers will ensure the podcast is shared around the web, such as TikTok true-crime accounts @TrueCrimeKari and True Crime Kourt, which boast over 21 billion views. Those who view the episodes until the end will receive a free pair of glasses from Kits.
Kits’ affordability is frequently a cornerstone of its communications, boasting that its glasses are handmade in Canada, for a tenth of the average cost of other eyewear brands.
