Spotted! Dressing up like Barbie with AR

A Snapchat lens is the latest in the upcoming film's massive global marketing push.

Anyone whose childhood involved dressing up their Barbie and Ken dolls, but wished they could have their own version of their outfits, are in luck.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio behind the Barbie film, worked with Snapchat to create an augmented reality lens that allows users to virtually try on version of outfits worn by actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the film. They can also customize the outfit with accessories and try out different photo backgrounds.

The lens lets users take a cue from Robbie, who has been wearing outfits inspired by ones worn by the doll over the last six decades during the press tour for the film.

In fact, one of the most notable things about the movie pre-release has been the marketing push behind it. In June, another Snapchat activation allowed users to scan various world landmarks – from the Statue of Liberty to the Coliseum in Rome – to see what they would look like in “Barbie Land,” including a new pink paint job. Outside of social – where efforts have included giving the film’s characters profiles on Bumble – there has also been a major out-of-home and experiential push, from wordless billboards simply painted in “Barbie pink” to a life-sized Barbie dream home that was available on Airbnb and the subject of an Architectural Digest tour.
