Will ‘n’ Kate ring in big ratings

Over five million viewers tune in to Canadian TV on Friday morning to watch Kate walk down the aisle.

It speaks to the enduring star power of the British monarchy that the marriage of the king-to-be drew almost as many viewers as the Oscars in Canada – a remarkable feat considering the ceremony was well underway by 6 a.m.

According to BBM Canada, over five million Canadians tuned in to Canadian television between 6 and 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 29, to watch Kate as she emerged from the wedding vehicle procession and revealed her much-anticipated Alexander McQueen dress to the world.

According to the same release from Bell Media, over 12 million Canadians – almost 40% of the population – tuned in to at least some part of the broadcast, which ran across all the main networks.

The royal hullaballoo resulted in CTV.ca’s most-watched live stream ever, the broadcaster reported this weekend, earning over 115,000 video views from 85,000 people during the church ceremony. The website earned over a million unique visitors and almost nine million page views, which, Bell Media said, was 79% higher than its previous one-day record.
