Three-and-a-half million Canadians tuned in on Day 6 of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games to watch short track speed skater Marianne St-Gelais win a silver medal for Canada, while 2.9 million Canadians watched CTV to watch Maelle Ricker accept her gold.
The most-watched event of the day was men’s short track speed skating (5000m relay semifinals) with 4.9 million viewers, while 1.4 million watched Canada vs. Sweden in women’s hockey on TSN. Men’s halfpipe qualifiers were the most-watched broadcast ever on OLN, with 222,000 viewers, while the nighttime final earned 4.3 million viewers on CTV.
It was a lower ratings day than seen on average for the first five days of the Games, but Day 7’s Canada-Switzerland men’s hockey game is sure to bump numbers back up once more. The Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium reports that 96% of Canadians have now tuned into the Games at some point.
The top-five most-watched events on television for Day 6 were:
